Due to her beauty, many men who wished to court and eventually marry her desired Medusa.

Some stories claim that Medusa would brag about being more beautiful than Athena. Medusa, along with many beautiful virgins worshipped at the temple of Athena. One day when she was at the temple, Poseidon was enthralled by her beauty and decided to take her innocence there at the alter.

Due to the sacredness of the site in which she was worshipping, Athena was appalled that someone could do this in her temple. She was unable to punish Poseidon because he was an Upper God, so instead cast her wrath on Medusa. Athena turned Medusa’s beautiful golden hair into slithering snakes and deprived her of her charms.
